Police Lead NFI Instructor Taught

To be recognised as a National Firearms Instructor (NFI) lead trainer, staff are required to hold the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training (CET) and achieve the following additional units:

• Developing, using and organising resources in a specialist area (level 5)
• Action learning to support development of subject specific pedagogy (level 5)
• Equality and diversity (level 4)
• Preparing for the mentoring role (level 4)
• Manage learning and development in groups (level 4)

The programme is designed to complete the additional units required for recognition. Learners will received nationally recognised Highfield certification to show they have achieved these additional units.

Learners must complete of a portfolio of evidence that must cover all assessment criteria. This includes five short answer written assignments. They will also provide reflective accounts, witness statements and work products which are submitted for assessment throughout the course.  Learners will receive verbal and written feedback on their work and the opportunity to resubmit, if further evidence is required.

Learners will need to supply your level 4 Certificate in Education and Training (CET) certificate, as evidence of prior learning and teaching practice. Learners will need one teaching observation, of approximately 1 hour) in the workplace to be carried out by a suitably qualified and senior staff member. Observations can include online teaching and face to face. They will be given detailed feedback after each teaching observation to discuss their practice.

Learners must be observed in the workplace by a suitably qualified colleague. The observer must hold a minimum of the Level 4 Certificate in Education and should be in a senior role such as line manager, observer or IQA.  Best for Training will provide observation guidance and paperwork to the observer to support them in this important role.

The observation will provide evidence to the following units and can also provide evidence for the optional units:

• Developing, using and organising resources in a specialist area (level 5)
• Manage learning and development in groups (level 4)

This is a blended learning programme. Learners are allocated a tutor, and they will complete a face-to-face induction via Teams. The cohort will attend 6 workshop sessions via Teams.  The times and dates will be arranged to meet organisation requirements and work patterns. There are usually planned once per month, for the duration of the programme. The sessions will be led by a highly qualified and experienced teacher who will provide support and guidance to the learners to help them achieve their qualification.

This is complemented by an individual learning plan based on online tutorials and support until the learner has fully complete the qualification. Every learner will have a named personal tutor providing unlimited online support throughout the course and successfully gain the qualification.

Learners will be observed in your workplace by a suitably qualified colleague. The observer must hold a minimum of the Level 4 Certificate in Education and should be in a senior role such as line manager, observer or IQA.  Best for Training will provide observation guidance and paperwork to your observer to support them in this important role.

Once the portfolio is completed the certificate can be claimed; we usually expect this be within 6 months from the start of the course.

Learners will attend six x 3-hour workshop sessions. Learners will be allocated a named trainer who will provide unlimited online support throughout the qualification. They will have a face-to-face online induction with their trainer to plan first steps and answer any questions they may have.

Further tutorials can be arranged, either face to face, online or via telephone, as required.

Please note – to hold the Lead Instructor status, staff also need to have achieved the CAVA assessor qualification (or equivalent, for example A1).
