What is the assessment cycle?

The assessment planning cycle is a structured process assessors use to ensure that assessments are valid, fair, consistent, and aligned with learning outcomes or performance criteria. It involves several key stages that guide assessors from preparation through to review. 

A typical assessment cycle:

1. Identify the Assessment Requirements

• Understand the qualification, unit standards, or learning outcomes.
• Determine what evidence is needed to prove competence.
• Consider the context, level, and assessment methods required.

2. Plan the Assessment

• Agree on the assessment method (e.g., observation, written work, questioning).
• Decide when, where, and how the assessment will take place.
• Communicate plans clearly with the learner and, if necessary, others involved.
• Consider the individual needs of learners (e.g., reasonable adjustments).

3. Prepare for the Assessment

• Gather assessment materials (e.g., checklists, observation forms, assignments).
• Ensure the environment and resources are suitable.
• Confirm that learners understand the process, criteria, and expectations.

4. Conduct the Assessment

• Observe and collect evidence of the learner’s performance.
• Use appropriate methods to judge against criteria.

5. Make the Assessment Decision

• Evaluate the evidence collected against the standards.
• Judge whether the learner has met the required criteria.
