How Do I Know Which Assessor Course Is Right for Me?

Becoming a qualified assessor is a great way to support learners, develop skills in quality assurance, and progress in education or vocational training. However, there are several assessor qualifications — and choosing the right one depends on what you want to assess and where you will be assessing.

This handout explains each qualification and helps you decide which one fits your role, experience, and goals.

Understanding the Different Assessor Qualifications

There are four main Level 3 assessor qualifications. They all include the same theory unit, but they differ in what they allow you to assess.

Level 3 Award in Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment (UPPA)

This is the theory-only qualification. It is ideal if you want to understand assessment but do not need to assess learners yet.

You should choose this if you:

Want an introduction to assessment
Are new to training or education
Do not currently have access to learners to assess
Want CPD rather than a full assessor role

This qualification does not qualify you to assess.

Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment (ACWE)

This qualification allows you to assess learners in their workplace doing real, practical tasks.

Choose this if you:

Will assess apprentices or employees in real work settings
Need to observe learners carrying out practical tasks
Work in sectors like care, construction, hospitality, hairdressing, engineering, etc.

This qualification does not allow you to assess classroom-based or simulated assessments.

Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement (AVRA)

This qualification allows you to assess classroom-based learning, such as assignments, tests, portfolios, or skills demonstrated in a simulated environment.

Choose this if you:

Assess theory-based qualifications
Work in a classroom, workshop, or training centre
Do not need to assess learners in their workplace

This qualification does not allow you to assess real workplace competence.

Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA)

This is the full assessor qualification. It qualifies you to assess both:

Competence in the workplace
Vocational skills, knowledge, and understanding in classroom or simulated settings

Choose this if you:

Want to be fully qualified
Need to assess in multiple environments
Work for a training provider, college, or apprenticeship organisation
Want the most flexible and widely recognised assessor qualification

This is the most popular option for new assessors.

How Do I Choose the Right Course?

Ask yourself the following:

Where will I be assessing?

In the workplace only? → ACWE
In a classroom or training centre only? → AVRA
Both workplace and classroom? → CAVA
Not assessing yet? → UPPA

Do I have access to learners to assess?

If no, choose UPPA until you do.
If yes, choose ACWE, AVRA, or CAVA depending on your role.

Do I want the most flexible qualification?

CAVA is the full, comprehensive assessor qualification.

What Work Product Evidence Will I Need?

For practical assessor qualifications (ACWE, AVRA, CAVA), you will need access to real learners so you can carry out:

Observations
Professional discussions
Assessments of work products
Planning and feedback sessions
