If you work on accredited qualifications, you will be familiar with the role of the External Quality Assurer (EQA) in supporting your centre to provide high quality provision and maintaining the quality and standards of the qualification.
If you are a qualified Internal Quality Assurer (IQA), this is a new career route you may be interested in exploring. There are over 200 Awarding Organisations covering every vocational sector and all require experienced, occupationally expert staff to be ‘guardians of the qualification’. Most EQA’s are employed on a freelance basis, you are provided with standardisation training and support and pay rates are in the region of £150 – £250 per centre.
Most External Quality Assurers are required to gain the Level 4 Award in the External Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice within a specific time once they are employed. This qualification consists of two units. The first unit is also a standalone qualification Level 4 Award in Understanding the External Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice. This is knowledge based and can be completed before you begin working as an EQA. To complete the additional unit, you must be employed by an Awarding Organisation as you must provide evidence from a minimum of two centre EQA visits.
There are a variety of ways to find work as an EQA. A straightforward Google search can find many vacancies. Additionally, visiting the Awarding Organisations websites can often find a variety of roles including examiners, resource writers for teaching resources and exam materials and, of course, external quality assurance roles.
