Police Lead NFI Instructor

To be recognised as a lead National Firearms Trainer (NFI) trainer, you are required to hold the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training (CET) and the following additional units:

• Developing, using and organising resources in a specialist area (level 5)
• Action learning to support development of subject specific pedagogy (level 5)
• Equality and diversity (level 4)
• Preparing for the mentoring role (level 4)
• Manage learning and development in groups (level 4)

The programme is designed to complete the additional units required for recognition. You will received nationally recognised Highfield certification to show you have achieved these additional units.

You must complete of a portfolio of evidence that must cover all assessment criteria. This includes five short answer written assignments. You will also provide reflective accounts, witness statements and work products which are submitted for assessment throughout the course. You will receive verbal and written feedback on your work and the opportunity to resubmit if further evidence is required.

You will need to supply your level 4 Certificate in Education and Training (CET) certificate, as evidence of your prior learning and teaching practice. You will need one teaching observation (of approximately 1 hour) in your workplace to be carried out by a suitably qualified and senior staff member. Observations can include online teaching and face to face. You will be given detailed feedback after each teaching observation to discuss your practice.

You will be observed in your workplace by a suitably qualified colleague. The observer must hold an minimum of the Level 4 Certificate in Education and should be in a senior role such as line manager, observer or IQA. Best for Training will provide observation guidance and paperwork to your observer to support them in this important role.

The observation will provide evidence to the following units and can also provide evidence for the optional units:

Developing, using and organising resources in a specialist area (level 5)
Manage learning and development in groups (level 4)

This is a distance learning programme. Learners are allocated a tutor, and they will complete a face-to-face induction via Teams. This is followed by an individual learning plan based on online tutorials and support. Over the length of the course, observations will be planned to show the development of skills and knowledge.

You will be observed in your workplace by a suitably qualified colleague. The observer must hold an minimum of the Level 4 Certificate in Education and should be in a senior role such as line manager, observer or IQA. Best for Training will provide observation guidance and paperwork to your observer to support them in this important role.

Once the observation has been completed and you have achieved all the written work for the units, your full certificate can be claimed; we usually expect this be within 6 months from the start of the course.

Individual staff can begin this course at any time of the year and will benefit from a personalised approach to meet their needs. This is a cost-effective way to train smaller numbers of staff and enable them to gain a nationally recognised teaching qualification and their COP recognised NFI Lead Instructor status.

You will be allocated a named trainer who will provide unlimited online support throughout the qualification. You will have a face-to-face online induction with your trainer to plan first steps and answer any questions you may have. Further tutorials can be arranged, either face to face, online or via telephone, as required.

On successful completion of this qualification, you will have the required qualification to confirm your role as a NFI Lead Instructor or to progress onto this role in your organisation.

Please note – to hold the NFI Lead Instructor status, you also need to have achieved your CAVA assessor qualification (or equivalent, for example A1).
