Best for Training’s Highfield Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training is the ideal course for you if you teach or train others. This is a nationally recognised qualification and is an opportunity to enhance your job opportunities, develop your skills and ensure you are training to a high standard. The content of the course will help you develop your planning, delivery and assessment of your learners. It will allow you to reflect on your practice and improve your teaching.
You do not need to have previous experience teaching or training, although you may have already achieved the Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET). This course will develop your experience and understanding of teaching and assessment and will gain a nationally recognised accredited level 4 qualification. It may also be of interest to assessors who wish to gain a recognised Level 4 teaching qualification.
There is a requirement for a minimum of 30 hours of teaching practice for this qualification. There is no requirement to evidence working with groups of learners to achieve this qualification. You will need to be observed for three hours by a suitably qualified persona in your workplace to complete this qualification.
Although it is not a requirement, it is effective practice for every trainee teacher to be allocated a subject specialist mentor from their workplace whose role is to provide specialist advice and information on the successful teaching of a specific subject. Ideally the mentor will be working in, or be familiar with, the trainee’s place of teaching practice so that the mentor can support the trainee locally. If you cannot identify a workplace mentor this does not disqualify you from the qualification.
Highfield Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training consists of a excellent choice of units which meets the needs of a range of teaching and training environments.
To achieve the Highfield Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training (RQF) you must achieve a minimum of 36 credits overall.
There are five mandatory units that must be fully completed to gain the qualification:
- Unit 1 – Understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training
- Unit 2 -Planning to meet the needs of learners in education and training
- Unit 3 – Delivering education and training
- Unit 4 – Assessing learners in education and training
- Unit 5 – Using resources for education and training
There are a wide range of optional units to personalise the learning experience and ensure its relevant for your teaching role. You will need to complete 15 credits (approximately 1-2 units) from the optional group. If you have already have achieved the assessor qualification or the Level 3 Award in Education and Training there is possible Recognition of Prior Learning available after discussion with your tutor.
You must complete of a portfolio of evidence that must cover all assessment criteria. This includes four short answer written assignments. You will also provide reflective accounts, witness statements and work products which are submitted for assessment throughout the course. You will receive verbal and written feedback on your work and the opportunity to resubmit if further evidence is required. You will be given detailed feedback after each teaching observation to discuss how you can improve your teaching.
There must be a minimum of three observations totalling a minimum of three hours. Any single observation must be a minimum of half an hour. Observations should be appropriately spaced throughout the whole programme and take into account a trainee teacher’s progress. Observations can include online teaching and face to face. You must successfully achieve ‘good’ observation grades for at least one out of the three mandatory teaching observations, and evidence the 30 hours teaching practice.
You may use an observer from your workplace but they must hold an minimum of the Level 4 Certificate in Education and be in a senior role such as line manager, observer or IQA. Best for Training will provide observation guidance and paperwork to you observer to support them in this important role. If you require an observer to be provided from Best for Training then there will be an additional cost.
The three observations provide evidence to the following units and can also provide evidence for the optional units:
- Unit 3 – Delivering education and training (Level 4)
- Unit 4 – Assessing learners in education and training (Level 4)
- Unit 5 – Using resources for education and training (Level 4)
Learners are expected to complete the qualification within six months. However, this can be reduced based on your previous experience and knowledge.
You will be allocated a named assessor who will provide you with unlimited online support throughout the qualification. You will have a face to face online induction with your assessor to plan your first steps and answer any questions you may have. Further tutorials can be arranged with your assessor, either face to face, online or via telephone, as required.
