New Year, new career

It is the start of a New Year, which means it’s a time of new beginnings and New Year’s resolutions. With the New Year comes an opportunity for reflection and a time to make positive changes.  If you’re stuck in a job that you’re not entirely happy with, if your children are all now at school or if you just want to try something new then perhaps now is the time to plan your new career and look into possible new roles for 2018.

Here are a few things to do to get your new job search into motion.

Make a list of the things you love to do

A job is always so much more rewarding if you are passionate about it. Do you love children? Do you prefer being outside? Are you good with maths? Are you a good listener? Are you creative? Brainstorm with family and friends the types of careers that might suit you and be open minded!

Try something new

It’s not easy to think of something new to do, sometimes it’s the things that we least expect that we love the best!  Search local colleges or training companies that offer short taster courses; it’s always best to try a short introductory course before you invest in retraining and gaining new qualifications.

Have you considered training to be a counsellor, assessor, bookkeeper, teaching assistant, florist, accountant, carer for the elderly, teacher or childminder? There are so many possibilities so first of all think about what makes you happy and what you would like to try. Then give it a go!

Establish your online presence

There are a number of sites dedicated to hosting professional profiles, such as LinkedIn, where prospective employers and employees can connect individually or through groups. If you’re looking for a new job then add a post on social media because you never know what doors this may open!

Browse job sites

Most jobs are now advertised online so browsing job sites is a great way to consider what kinds of positions are available. Get inspired!

If 2018 is the year for you to get your dream job, then you can make it happen!
