Introduction to Counselling
Our 5-week Introduction to Counselling course located in Essex is a perfect way to find out more about the skills and knowledge counsellors need and discover if this rewarding and challenging career is right for you. The course will introduce you to basic counselling skills, the theories behind them and will help enhance your own communication skills too.
This 5 week course is aimed at those who are wanting to learn about the basics of counselling. This course is interactive, informative and engaging. In every session you will be able to take part in activities and discussions to learn more about counselling.

It is ideal for those who are considering becoming a counsellor or for those who are curious about the subject. It is also for those who would like to learn more about themselves and others.
Session One: Is a gentle introduction to the course and the topics you will cover. Discover more about how you and others learn and absorb knowledge. Find out what effective communication is and how to improve your skills and finally the importance of reflection in counselling.
Session Two: All counsellors work to an ethical framework which outlines the responsibilities of a counsellor. Learn more about this, the role of a counsellor and what happens when the Ethical Framework is breached.
Session Three: Counselling skills are based on three main psychological theories. Meet the first beginning with the fascinating theories of Freud and a brief introduction psychodynamic theory.
Session Four: This week you will be introduced to the second theory and how this is used in counselling. You will have the opportunity to try it for yourself! You will learn about the work of Abraham Maslow and Carl Rogers and the Humanistic and Person Centred way of working.
Session Five: This final session looks at the third theories of Albert Ellis (Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy) and Aaron Beck (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy – CBT). CBT is currently used widely with clients with depression and anxiety. In the final week you will be able to find out what options are available for your next steps.
