This 1 day, on-site Highfield Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course is for people who are required to act as an Emergency First Aider at Work.

Participants will learn the skills required to manage an emergency situation effectively with the aim of preventing situations from becoming worse and maintaining life until help arrives.

This course is recommended for persons in low-risk and smaller workplaces, where a nominated person is required to take charge in the event of illness or accident and for larger organisations where fully qualified First Aiders can benefit from extra support.

Many private individuals also book on to this course as it is an excellent introduction to first aid for the general public and volunteers.

Firstly, you must decide if you are a high or low risk environment. Next you must consider how many staff you employ. The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) provides a table showing what First Aid qualifications/ training your organisation requires:

Subjects taught include:

  • Aims and principles of first aid
  • What to do in an emergency
  • Basic Life Support (CPR)
  • Management of the unconscious casualty
  • Assessment and treatment of a casualty who is wounded or bleeding
  • Choking and asphyxia
  • Assessment and treatment of burns
  • Assessment and treatment of miscellaneous medical conditions
  • Record keeping

This qualification is assessed by the following two methods:

  1. Practical assessment – there will be continual assessment by the tutor as participants demonstrate the practical first aid skills, during the sessions.
  2. Theory assessment – Learners must answer a series of written questions during the sessions using the Highfield assessment paperwork, with support from the tutor.

The training event is 6 hours and can be arranged over one or two days.

The price includes:

  • Registration and certification
  • Postage of certificates

The qualification is valid for a period of three years after which point learners must retake the course. In addition, annual refresher training is strongly recommended.

If your organisation requires more than 12 staff to be trained, additional trainers can be booked for the same date.
