Highfield Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (PFA)

Our Essex, Kent and London-based Highfield Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (PFA) course ensures at least one Early Years practitioner in a setting has a full Paediatric First Aid (PFA) certificate, as per Ofsted guidelines.

All newly qualified entrants to the early years workforce who have completed a level 2 and/or level 3 qualification on or after 30 June 2016, must also have either a full PFA or an emergency PFA certificate within three months of starting work in order to be included in the required staff: child ratios.

This nationally accredited qualification meets the highest standards in training set by Ofsted and fully meets the statutory requirements of the  Early Years Foundation Stage.

This qualification also meets the requirements for accredited training as described by Millie’s Mark Foundation for settings wishing to gain this status.

The Award has 2 units which must be fully completed to gain the qualification:

  • Emergency Paediatric First Aid
  • Managing paediatric illness, injuries and emergencies

Topics include the role and responsibilities of the paediatric first-aider and providing first aid for an infant or a child who is unresponsive and breathing normally. The qualification also covers how to administer first aid to an infant or a child with head and spinal injuries, who is choking or suffering from anaphylaxis. The training is very interactive with all attendees having time to practice their skills and gain confidence in administering first aid to babies and children.

This qualification is assessed by the following two methods:

  1. Practical assessment – Learners must demonstrate the practical first aid skills, during the sessions, as indicated within the Highfield assessment paperwork.
  2. Theory assessment – Learners must answer a series of written questions during the sessions using the Highfield assessment paperwork

The training event is 12 hours (6 hours each day) over two days.

The price includes:

  • Highly qualified trainer with a background of working with children
  • Paediatric first aid  book
  • Registration and certification
  • Postage of certificates

The qualification is valid for a period of three years after which point learners must retake the course.  In addition, annual refresher training is strongly recommended.

Really enjoyed the course! Best first aid course I’ve attended. Sam and Anne were brilliant trainers and went through everything very clearly and gave good positive feedback to us. I really appreciated both of their support and understanding of my anxiety to do role play in front of the group and appreciate Sam consulting me before we done an activity!
