Advanced Counselling Programme – Working with Children and Young People


It is a sad reality  there is an increase in children and young people with mental health difficulties. Latest statistics show that one in 10 primary school children have mental health disorder, one in seven 11-16 year olds, and one in six 17 to 19 year olds and there is a growing demand for counsellors who can work with this age group.

This Highfield accredited Advanced Counselling Programme – Working with Children and Young People course is aimed at existing qualified counsellors who adhere to a professional code of ethics and wish to embed their current knowledge in their practice

It offers the chance to develop understanding of the importance of theory, ethics and reflective practice to positive outcomes for clients.  The course will provide depth to current practice and allow for a choice of study in an area that may not be addressed in current work but is relevant to expanding practice.

This course will also provide you with 45 hours of relevant counselling CPD.

The Advanced Counselling  Programme consists of 3 mandatory modules –

Module 1: Application of Theory to practice: This module will investigate the importance of theory to practice.  Consideration will also be given to ethical frameworks and their relevance in the modern face of counselling.

Module 2: Developing Reflective Practice: This module will allow the participants to improve their reflective skills and be able to link successful reflective practice with positive clinical outcomes for client work.

Model 3: Working with Children and Young People:  This module will provide understanding around areas of practice that need to be considered when preparing to work with children and young people.  Looking at the purpose of counselling with this client group and common issues that are relevant.  Safeguarding and multi-agency working will be investigated.

Entry Requirements

The Diploma is aimed at qualified counsellors and therapists who wish to gain a higher level certificate.

You will be expected to provide evidence of your qualified counsellor status at your first session. This could be a copy of your certificate or your registration documents with BACP or National Counselling Society (NCS).

On course requirements

  • You must provide the set course text book, John McLeod, An Introduction to Counselling
  • You must demonstrate ethical practice and evidence of your supervision, if you are in current practice.

You will be assessed through:

  • Personal reflective journals throughout the course
  • 10 minute case presentation
  • 3,000 word essay

On successful completion of your course, you will be graded Distinction, Merit or Pass.

There are no exams for this programme.

Please be aware that this programme has been accredited by Highfield and you will receive your certificate from Highfield.

This programme is not a qualification and it is not recognised by the qualification regulators of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland or another body or organisation .

The taught sessions are for 15 weeks, for 3 hours per week on Tuesday evenings.

The course runs on a Tuesday evening 6.00m- 9.00pm term time only.

The next course begins on the 28th January 2020 and completes on 2nd June 2020

Catherine Drewer

Catherine has a First Class Honours Degree in Counselling and a Post Graduate Certificate in Clinical Supervision. Catherine has a successful private practice working with a range of clients. She also works in schools with pupils of various ages (6-18) along with providing Supervision for pastoral and teaching staff. Catherine is an experienced teacher of Counselling and Clinical Supervisor as well as an experienced trainer. Catherine is an accredited member of the National Counselling Society (NCS), a member of BACP and is committed to promoting the professional standing of trained counsellors.

Catherine has a real passion for counselling work and likes nothing better than to demonstrate this passion to others. Her classes are thought provoking and informative and she believes that everyone should learn about counselling because it will change the way they look at things.
